Yes, as a Sleep consultant, I regularly work with families to break the cosleeping habit . But that doesn’t mean I’m against it if it’s working for your family.

Although I personally will never cosleep it, doesn’t work for our family, that doesn’t mean it doesn’t work for somebody else . Not all kids are able to go to cosleep!

I swear, even if I tried to go sleep with my daughter, she would ask me all night if I was sleeping or not and then she’d come up with like 50 questions that have nothing to do with anything at all 🤣 I know there’s Moms and Dad’s out here. Who know who I’m talking about!!

TODDLER EXPERIENCING EARLY MORNING WAKE UPS!?

everyone tries to keep a really consistent summer schedule, but sometimes it could be impossible. It’s usually lighter for longer times you’re doing so much more during the day your day tend to be a lot more unpredictable so its important that your little one gets enough rest! Many people don’t realize that in the summer it’s really common to see toddlers wake up early mornings around 4:30-5:00AM for the day! This change really throws parents off, even when they tried to be super consistent with their bedtime. The problem isn’t with their bedtime the problem is not adjusting for all the summer activities that are going on! That’s right many kids need an earlier bedtime for us the summer not a later one! Early morning, wake up or sign of the child being overtired. There’s nothing more exhausting than spending the day in the sun and swimming in the pool. So don’t push bedtime out because it’s lighter out consider moving it earlier so your child doesn’t end up becoming overtired and waking up really early in the morning… let’s be honest no one wants to wake up earlier in the summer!

COSLEEPING ISNT FOR EVERYONE!

So before you come at me let me explain something. My toddler doesn’t sleep if we let her lay in our bed. She will literally lay and chat the whole night away and ask if I’m sleeping or not. Not everyone’s little one will just lay down and cuddle up and sleep.

So does this make me a horrible mom who neglects her child’s needs?!

HELLLL NOOO!

I ensure my toddler is confident in her space. we have had a strong routine since she was an infant and we are consistent.

If she does wake up in the middle of the night I don’t yell at her or ignore her! I give her a big hug and we walk back to her bed where I tuck her in and give her a huge hug and kiss and remind her mama is close if she needs me!

Let’s also throw this out there…I want some time with my partner alone! 😜🫶🏻 and it’s ok to feel that way!!

If cosleeping works for your family then cool!! If it doesn’t that’s ok too! As long as your little one is safe and everyone is getting the sleep they need that’s what is important!

No on needs to be doing that much math in one day!! Wake windows are great before 4 months but at 4 months they become a real hassle!!

It’s constant confusion and tallying of time trying to separate feeding and sleeping but keep them together but also count the hours separately 🫠😵‍💫

And guess what! My friend and I have a mutual understanding that we do what’s best for our families. She had to leave early once bc her daughter was having a hard time, I came late because my kid was napping. And we LOVE EACH OTHER for it! 🫶🏻

My best friend was hosting a BBQ and she lives about an hour away. It started at 2pm which works perfect for them and their little one.

Well my son doesn’t wake up from his nap until at least 2pm! He’s only on 1 nap so he needs about 2 hours to feel good!

We could have throw him in the car and hoped he slept an hour on the way but BBQS have lots of things to do, lots of kids to play with, bouncing and running around for hours!

So I could have went on time and probably had to leave early with a crying overstimulated child, orrrr I could have showed up a little late knowing the bbq was going on for hours! So we went late and my kids had a blasttttttt!!! No melting down, and even we stayed late to help clean up! Wouldn’t have it any other way!

Now my friend and I have a mutual understanding of this rule, you never have to say when your coming just come when you can, you never have to apologize for leaving early or coming late, and no matter how long your able to stay Im really happy I got to see you.

Not all friends and families are like this and it’s ok! It’s ok to be flexible with sleep and hold boundaries! My kids napped on time but went to bed really late! That’s ok!

When I was about 8 months pregnant with my second child I got my certification to become a sleep consultant and started my own business. Yes it wasn’t easy but I’m so glad I did it. It truly change my life and my families.

When I was thinking about it, I was met with a mix of … now it’s not a good time you’ve been so sick this pregnancy. Why would you do that? You don’t know anything about business I thought you like teaching? Why can’t you do that when your kids are older? Is that even something worth the time doing?

Absolutely it is!! I’m rocking this Sleep consultant thing!! I have the opportunity to work with so many families whose lives I’ve changed for the bestttt! The only thing I wish I did differently was doing it sooner because I love it so damn much! 🫶🏻🫶🏻

I love being able to show my kids. You can work hard while pregnant and follow your dreams even after you have kids. My life never stopped. It only got better.

Since you brought your newborn home they cry the instant you put them down? Leaving you feeling helpless and exhausted wondering what you are doing wrong??

Well that’s how I felt! 😭😭

The second my daughter was out down she was screaming crying.

“That’s just what babies do! They cry and want you!”

⬆️Yeah unhelpful advice I got often.

Like so many clients who really struggle with newborn sleep this was a DAIRY INTOLERANCE!!

Did you guess right?!

How did I notice it?!
1) Families are following age appropriate wake windows
2) Child unable to lay flat without crying most of the time
3) Cries are high pitched and often paired with quick kicking of their feet
4) Stool has blood or mucus in it**** also looks sticky

At this point I refer the families to their pediatrician!! If positive the child is put on a dairy free formula or mom goes dairy free for her breastmilk to be dairy free!

We then go back to basics and begin with a strong routine, following wake windows, practicing independent sleep with support!

How good is your sleep knowledge?!

First things first is that early wake up! Idk about you but that’s toooo early for me to wake up everyday! Early Wake ups are clearly signs of a bedtime that is too late.

Next very few 8 month olds need feeds through the night at all and deff not every two hours! BUT if they are taking a full feed everytime we know they are HUNGRY! This shows me they aren’t getting enough daytime calories in. My suggest at this age is wean the feeds down 1 oz per night until they are gone and up the day time bottles by .5-1 oz each day! This will help redistribute the calories to the day.

8 month old should be on a 2 nap schedule!

So recap:
1) Move bedtime earlier
2) Wean feeds overnight up bottles during the day
3) Have an age appropriate 2 nap schedule

Toddler sleep can be so tricky. Not all toddlers sleep the same! You can ask 5 friends about their 2 year olds sleep and they would all have a different answer!

Here is the perfect little chart to help ensure your little one is getting the rest they need!

If your little one is waking up early in the morning they probably aren’t getting enough sleep and need an earlier bedtime! (Make that make sense 🙃)

The biggest mistake I see when working with clients?! Dropping that nap too early!! Littles start to fight naps around 2,2.5,3 years old! It’s important that you continue to offer the nap and if they skip it just move bedtime earlier!

We try to keep naps in as close to 4 as possible! That doesn’t mean your 3 year old will nap 2 hours and then go to bed at 7! You may have to cap the nap at 1 hour by then to ensure they get the rest they need without it impacting overnight sleep and bedtime!

AT LEAST MY KIDS SLEEP! 😴

I was diagnosed with a toxic thyroid nodule back in October after noticing a WIDL sensitivity to caffeine literally out of no where. I went from totally fine to feeling like someone put an IV of caffeine straight in me!

Even after getting put on medicine and balancing my numbers the caffeine sensitivity continues 🫠

I’m surviving but lord I am not always thriving haha

3)Give allllll the snuggles and love right before they get bed!

There is really nothing more important than an age appropriate schedule for a little one. Many people struggle with sleep training because they have a schedule that is not conducive to preventing overtired littles! Check your schedules! Once schedules are mastered a proper bedtime that limits transitions and is easy to follow is key to help your little one recognize it’s time for bed. Bedtime routine is about 15 minutes and gives their bodies enough time to recognize it’s bedtime. Finally one of the most important things to do before bed is to get all the snuggles in! there’s nothing more important than a meaningful love and connection right before the lights go off. Your child generally will cry because they want to be with you and spend time with you instead of going to bed. By adding the snuggles and special time you give them the opportunity to get your undivided attention and love right before bed.

Ok ok I know how it goes I have family too! Some family is planning around themselves, others are trying to be accommodating and some honestly don’t understand what it’s like to have little kids anymore.

Holidays starting right at nap time?
The party is definitely going late?
Not sure if the kids are going to have someplace to lay down if they are tired?

Worry about yourself! I’m sure in retrospect your families would rather an enjoyable time with the kids if you get there a little late or leave a little early. That beats the heck out of over stimulated over tired meltdowns!

It’s also ok to be flexible! Here are some tips to work around sleeping times
1) Let your little one sleep a little later from the morning or their first nap
2) Get in the car around nap time so they can snag a car nap! If that means leaving one parent in the car the other can go show their face so everyone knows you made it on time 😎
3) Bring your little comfy clothes to rest in. This could even be putting them in PJs for the ride home. This can make for a smoother transition into bed at night.

“Hi! I just wanted to check in. Do you mind if my little maybe lay down stairs for a few around 2? I want to come by on time I just know they’ll need to rest a little”

Ok ok I know how it goes I have family too! Some family is planning around themselves, others are trying to be accommodating and some honestly don’t understand what it’s like to have little kids anymore.

Holidays starting right at nap time?
The party is definitely going late?
Not sure if the kids are going to have someplace to lay down if they are tired?

Worry about yourself! I’m sure in retrospect your families would rather an enjoyable time with the kids if you get there a little late or leave a little early. That beats the heck out of over stimulated over tired meltdowns!

It’s also ok to be flexible! Here are some tips to work around sleeping times
1) Let your little one sleep a little later from the morning or their first nap
2) Get in the car around nap time so they can snag a car nap! If that means leaving one parent in the car the other can go show their face so everyone knows you made it on time 😎
3) Bring your little comfy clothes to rest in. This could even be putting them in PJs for the ride home. This can make for a smoother transition into bed at night.

Yup that’s right I said what I said!! Most of my newborn clients have infants who completely skipped over the 4 month sleep regression or saw very little disturbance in sleep for a day or so.

The horror stories of babies waking up every 20 mins is a reallllll thing! But don’t worry I’m here to help!

Building strong sleep foundations is KEY to skipping over regressions or barelyyy even noticing them.

My three big tips:
1) Practice independent sleep with supports
2) Follow and age appropriate routine
3) Give your baby 2-3 mins before going in to get them or picking them up when they wake up (unless they are extremely upset)

THAT LITTLE GIRL FELL ASLEEP SO FAST!

This made me laugh so hard!!! My 3 year-old loves racing right now and it has been so much fun and honestly a really easy way to transition between things.

I knew I had to get her to bed pretty quick. We had family over and she was almost overtired because she also started waking up earlier this week. So i knew if I can just get her to lay down, she would fall asleep really quick. Well I raced her to bed and she in fact won and she fell asleep in about one minute! 🤣🤣🤣 She was up just long enough to tell me she won! 🥇

So my unprofessional toddler trick is Race your toddler to sleep 🤣 Hey whatever works! We are all tired!
